Outdoor country pursuits are plentiful with the local Derwent Reservoir, it’s 3.5 miles in length with a thousand acres of clean and open water, which is devoted to fishing, wind surfing and sailing and is less than 3 miles from Wood House and its self-catering properties. Temporary membership is available to guests at the sailing club and course of fly fishing can be arranged too. Golfing enthusiasts will delight in the ample choice of several prestigious courses close by; Close House and the superior De Vere Slaley Hall which also hosts an activity centre for quad bike trails, archery, clay pigeon shooting and much more. Ramblers and cyclists will enjoy exploring the surrounding countryside on our doorstep and a short drive to heather moorlands with rugged uplands which include some of the highest, wildest, and most beautiful scenery in the country on the North Pennines. Hamsterley Forest provides miles of lovely forest walks leading to High Force, England's largest waterfall.
The historic market town of Hexham dominated by its majestic abbey, offers an abundance of amenities only 15 miles away and the pretty village of Corbridge renowned for its specialist shops and quaint tea rooms is 12 miles. Within 30-40 minutes is the Bowes Museum, Raby Castle, Beamish Museum, Vindolanda, the Roman Site at Corstopitum and Housesteads Roman Fort Museum are all interesting historic attractions within easy driving distance.
Slightly further afield 40-60 minutes are the beautiful Northumberland coastline and castles galore such as Alnwick, Bamburgh & Lindisfarne.
For those favouring the city life, the vibrant city of Newcastle well known for its global, cultural pursuits and the extensive shopping facilities is 30 minutes’ drive away and just over the Tyne River is the world-renowned Gateshead Metro Shopping Centre, along with the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the Baltic Arts Centre and the Sage Gateshead music venue are all less than 20 miles east. Durham city centre lies 20 minutes south of the property with its Castle University & World Heritage Cathedral.
